Kyiv, Ukraine - US President Joe Biden paid an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Monday, February 20, 2023, in a show of solidarity with the country on the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Biden's visit came at a critical time, as the conflict in Ukraine has intensified in recent weeks.

Biden arrived in Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with the two leaders walking the streets of Kyiv together as a powerful political signal of support. The visit required unprecedented security measures, with police imposing a barricade and air raid sirens heard as Biden's motorcade arrived at St Michael's Cathedral in central Kyiv.

During his five-hour visit, Biden met with Zelenskyy at the Mariinsky Palace, honored Ukraine's fallen soldiers, and spoke with US embassy staff. He stressed the importance of standing with Ukraine and the world in the fight for democracy.

Biden also announced an additional half-billion dollars in US assistance to Ukraine, on top of the over $50 billion already provided. The aid includes shells for howitzers, anti-tank missiles, air surveillance radars, and other support, but no new advanced weaponry. During their meeting, Zelenskyy and Biden discussed the possibility of Ukraine receiving long-range weapons that had not been provided before.

In a tweet, Biden emphasized the US's unwavering commitment to Ukraine's democracy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He praised Ukraine for standing up to Russia's invasion forces nearly a year ago, and pledged long-term support for Ukraine in its fight for freedom and democracy.

Biden's visit to Ukraine comes at a crucial moment in the war, as tensions have escalated in recent weeks. The US President's visit was seen as a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine, and a reaffirmation of the United States' commitment to its ally in the face of Russian aggression.
